At Ohio Prairie Nursery, we celebrate Earth Day everyday by providing people with native seed that supports a huge diversity of wildlife. It is part of our mission to improve the health of our planet and make a valuable contribution to the Earth's future. We believe that the best way to renew or create sustainable native ecosystems is to provide decision makers with the products, services and knowledge that will enable them to make sound ecological and economical decisions that positively impact the environment.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, and now over 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activites worldwide. You can make a difference this Earth Day by planting some native seed that will provide many benefits for our planet. These seeds will create a valuable habitat for many different native insects, mammals and birds. Native plants are all well adapted to our environment and require less water than most plants and also do not require fertilizers or pesticides. The deep roots of many native plants also absorb huge amounts of rain, reducing stormwater runoff and erosion. There are many benefits to planting native, but the process is simple. All the details you need are here, making it easy to get started.

Native plants can require some time to establish, but an easy way to get started and attract some pollinators this growing season is to plant some annual species in container. Lemon Mint, Indian Blanket and Partridge Pea are all good choices that will thrive and flower throughout this summer and even into fall. If you have the space to put in larger habitat, we have a number of amazing seed packets that will delight and attract birds, bees, butterflies and more for years to come.

Whatever route you decide to take, planting native seeds is a great way to celebrate Earth Day and show you care for our planet. As always, the Prairie Guys are here to help with any questions you may have.
