Notes From Our General Manager Bob - It's Harvest Time!

October 23, 2013

Harvest season is still in full swing here at OPN. This time of year finds us focusing primarily on Goldenrods and Asters. These are the number one and two native herbaceous genera in terms of the number of native insects that they support. This is one reason that we utilize them in our mixes; they are a main component in prairie and native plantings. It takes a lot of material from the field to produce a PLS (Pure Live Seed) pound of seed. Yields typically run 4% or less of harvested weight. This is an image of some Flat-Topped Aster prior to processing. Flat-Topped Aster is a beautiful and underutilized species. Look for it in next year's mixes. We work very hard to make sure we have native seed material available for projects like the ones we mention on our blog and Facebook. We want to make sure that when you are ready to plant native, we're ready to support you!
