Cardinal Flower - A hummingbird magnet!
Outside the Ohio Prairie Nursery offices there is a grouping of Cardinal Flower that has been continuously blooming for the past six weeks. It's a daily magnet for countless hummingbirds. Right now, I'm captivated by three hummingbirds drinking nectar from these red, tubular flowers.
If you are looking to attract hummingbirds to your garden - and who doesn't enjoy watching these amazing birds! - Cardinal Flower is a species you must plant. It is said to prefer moist, rich soil and light conditions ranging from full sun to shade. However, at Ohio Prairie Nursery we have it growing in a dry, well-draining soil in full sun! We find that many species, if they are planted in areas of low competition where there are not aggressive plants consuming most of the resources (like substantial trees or aggressive grasses), will thrive in a variety of conditions once established. One of the benefits of planting open-pollinated seed is its high genetic diversity , and with that diversity comes individuals that can tolerate a wider range of site conditions. This means that you probably have an area where Cardinal Flower will thrive for you! Follow these fall planting tips to make sure your seed is sown correctly!
