Stormwater Basins can be divided into two catergories: Retention Basins and Detention Basins.

Retention Basins retain water and they are designed to hold water at a predesigned top of pool level. They require emergent material for planting below pool level and transitional material above top of pool water level.

Detention Basins detain water and let out slowly through a pre-designed outlet structure. The basin is designed to drain down and end up with no standing water.

The main function of Stormwater Basins is to improve water quality. Other additional benefits include:

  • Habitat Creation
  • Pollinator and Larval Species Support
  • Maintenance Reduction
  • Beautification
