Virginia Wild Rye is a native, perennial bunchgrass. It is similar to Canada wild rye (Elymus canadensis) in appearance, but is typically shorter in height with shorter awns on the seed head.
The seed heads are more erect than those of Canada Wild Rye which typically bow or droop.
It reaches approximately three feet in height, lacks rhizomes and reproduces by seed and tillers.
